Ah, for Yesterday!

Cheeky Missy

(sonnet attempt #XLIX)

XLIX

I can't enjoy today. I wish instead
For yesterdays so long departed; gone
Like morning dews when sun bright on the lawn
Quite vanish as if having ne'er been. Sped
Away like swirling mists in heat; all fled
E'er my adoring, ling'ring gaze withdrawn
Had seen its fill, like surf recedes. Alone
Upon the sands of time I wander, fed
By memories of bygone times, my joy
In what I cannot have. Today, you see,
Will join their ranks and I'll lament in vain,
Nor e'er enjoy the present, but alloy
Its pleasures by imagination's key,
Which paints too vividly my yesterdays.

  • Comment from author about the poem: So, finishing this evening's sonnet studies, arranging papers, I came across a couple lines intended...for a future sonnet? .....and too readily they suddenly seemed to flow. They are a self-reproof/self-mockery. And still so fresh, the internal errors will doubtless glare. Here is the first and original draft....to be edited later.
