Forgiven

Emi

It was I who betrayed you

I was the one who started the feud

I am the only one to blame

I started the fire and spread the flame

I left with a wink and hid my single tear

I would not, could not, show you my fear

I let go of your caring hand

And from your compassion I ran and ran

I attempted to stow away my terrible guilt

I tried to hide the treachery I had spilt

To no avail of course; it just ate away at my soul

All mistakes and all deceits must take their toll

Eventually I had to come crawling back

I saw your face and felt my heart crack

How could I have hurt you so?

Is not love the only thing I should have bestowed?

Instead of the anger I knew you would show

With forgiveness your face seemed to glow

You spread your arms wide and smiled

You proclaimed me innocent without a trial

I did not deserve your pardon – not at all!

Wasn’t it I who pushed you and made you fall?

And yet it is you who keeps me from the ground

Yet it is you who forgives me with without a sound

I suppose then it is you I should thank

Just when I thought my page had gone blank

For saving, for loving, for forgiving me

You are a hundred times the person I could ever be
