To Her Charming Majesty

Cheeky Missy

(sonnet # CCXVII)

Fair empress of the sable night! Who e'er
Presides with starry hosts, in silent thrill
White washing day's lost scen'ry with a chill
Light. In the velvet dark courts reigning where
Such myst'ry lurks, alluring captives ere
They know their danger. Sentinels half-fill
With looming shadows while the crickets trill,
Frogs serenade a world with rare compare.
The awesome sight is breathtaking: so bright,
So white, inspiring charms while calm seems to
Unite with heightened sens'ry call; delight,
Enchantment in thy thrall where summer's dew
Cool welcomes naked feet, so oft excite
When sleep must beckon, romance in thy hue.

  • Comment from author about the poem: Dashing outside after the twilight, I caught sight of the moon resplendent in bright white light, and fell prey, as it were, to "her charms." The curiosity is that an hour later, the sphere was no longer high in the sky, but rather appeared lower down near the western horizon and was now a golden colour. Go figure. Hahaha, that was AFTER I finished this hasty tribute that I discovered that alteration.
