The Last Day of September....

Cheeky Missy

(sonnet # CCXL)

Light dances, diamonds sparkling on the blue
Face of the lake reflecting merr'ly skies
Where white puff clouds race, while sunshine's warmth vies
With strong north breezes' chill; a game ensues
'Twixt shadows and dull sheens the whole day through,
As golden glow imbues the verdure, dies
Away when o'ercast shades ensue, and hies
Afresh to gild the scene with brighter hues.
Fair Autumn lately come is painting days
With gayest crimsons, oranges, yellows,
Maroons (and mauves?) with browns in store; and lays
Sound more akin to southbound travel's shows,
Bird flocks discussing routes ere fall's bouquets
Can sate in brilliance summer's loss to snow's.

  • Comment from author about the poem: After a rainy, stormy beginning to the week, gradually by that day we had some welcome dry weather. Chill had been in the air for some time it seemed and that last day was a tug-of-war between glowing sunny scenes with dappled shadows and overcast dull lighting under partially cloudy skies. Beginning a description, the sestet turned into the reminder of winter and I have written the final three lines thrice.
