Ah, Indian Summer!

Cheeky Missy

(CCXLIV)

Sweet summer's welcome warmth and voices fill
The air while autumn scen'ry's ev'rywhere,
Displaying in rainbow colours' lavish flair
A diff'rent mood; some trees stripped bare of frills
And carpeting the ground send winter's chill
Midst barefoot joy, reminders that her fair
Tease is not carefree anymore, that ere
Long all will be shut safe indoors, her thrills
Nigh lost to grey foreboding, though her sway
Still lures with darling harmonies, the keys
To days when life seemed thriving, e'er at play.
They call thee "Indian Summer," Love; the breeze
Of thy dear breath's a ling'ring kiss, decay
Now creeping 'round thy cheer, while thou dost please.

  • Comment from author about the poem: This little series on the four seasons as seen in Autumn is owing to the suggestion of a fellow poet. He thought "A Taste of Spring" and "Painting Autumn" needed but summer and winter to round the seasons out. Hence, a tribute to Indian Summer, and then an attempt at winter as well via his Autumnal hints.
