WATER OF LIFE - A SONNET

BRIAN & ANGELA

If into water you have slipped

you'll know it's really nondescript !

No taste no color and no smell

also it makes no sound as well !

A simple formula you know

written simply  H 2 O !

Abundant water - Planet Earth

that's how to life she's given birth !

Venus and Mars - too hot too cold

no liquid water we are told !

The deer for cooling water panted

never take this stuff for granted

Three weeks without a bite it's said

Three days no drink ? We'd all be DEAD

Simple sonnet 14 lines in rhyming couplets !

  • Comment from author about the poem: Water i a fascinating substance. We meet it every day as a liquid from the tap or well - as a gas (vapor) steam from the kettle - as a solid ice to cool our drink. Fascinating - there's not many other substance we meet every day in their solid - liquid and gaseous form. Planet earth is very wet and each human being has billions of gallons pf water but it is mainly salty (sea water) and undrinkable. Providing clean drinking water for the seven billion humans on Earth is increasingly difficult. Even in the UK our annual consumption of water is about equal to the annual rainfall - BRIAN

There's something magical about a simplistic sonnet, such lovely pace.

I have long admired those who write in classic structure. A challenge I am not brave enough to take on. This is a wonderful piece that serves as a reminder of our responsibility toward earth - the beauty and value of water is taken for granted - much as some of us take life for granted - you highlight this an much more in your sonnet. Congratulations!

Thanks SOPHIE for a beautiful comment. I use poetic licence ! For a fourteen line poet to be a sonnet it must have th same number of syllables in each line. It is not rhymed it is called BLANK VERSE and much of Shakespeare is written in this style. In my opinion a Sonnet (14 co-syllabic lines) can have any rhyming pattern - Yours BRIAN

I enjoyed your sonnet on water. It is the very source of life from which we came.
