Dementia

ameliewho

A dream of a dream within a dream of hope,

Reality is fading and she's failing to cope.

And through the blazing memories she weeps and weeps,

A deteriorating state while sorrow creeps.

A declaration of love and an oath of care,

But through the burst of anger her mentality begins to tear.

In sickness and in health she swore to The Lord,

And the fifty years of marriage that she truly adored.

But his soul has gone and his mind is lost,

A wicked demon that ageing cost.

Today he remembered, tomorrow he's gone for good

And now she's invited into widowhood.

      Thank you, means a lot.

WELCOME - and thank you for your first poem. Well crafted in elegant rhyming couplets which give the poem great flow. The subject is one we increasingly face and recently happened to a neighbour of mine. She saw her beloved husband deteriorate mentally from a respected intelligent man to unintelligible gibberish. In the end she had to put him in a home. I attended his funeral which was an excellent tribute by his Sons and for her - in a sense - it was a release and a relief. You have captured the scenario tenderly but realistically - BRIAN

It is one of the worst things to see someone go through, the person with dementia and their family. It's awful to see someone you know become less and less of themself each time you see them.

Thanks for the compliments, it means a lot, especially on my first post.
