The Trouble with Being a Mermaid

Doll in Wonderland

I liked you first in pictures

Before I met you, in person

I thought you had kind eyes, so blue

And soft hands that would always hold

I was so excited about you

And when we met,

You were so thrown off,

I knew that you could feel my magic

Radiating from my fairy dust heart

I liked your hand in mine

And seeing the your eyes crinkle in the corners

As we laugh like children

When I kissed you,

It was the first of a thousand electric kisses

Wanting you

But when you open your mouth,

And words tumble out

So pretentious and condescendingly

Taking cuts from my ethereal soul

And wasting the pieces, letting them rot

Instead of consuming them

I realize

The trouble with being a mermaid

Is sometimes when you get caught

It's by someone happy to tear out the hooks

From my tissue paper skin

And now looking at you in pictures

I realize

How much of my heart

I projected onto you.

What a waste of such pretty eyes,

And hands that will never hold.
