All it took
Was one look
And then I couldn’t look away
Yours eyes caught mine
And mine aligned
Just right to meet yours
As I looked deep into the ocean
I was taken over by an emotion
That I didn’t know a name for
Opia
Ancient Greek meaning of the eyes
Meaning the contact of our meeting eyes
Was our opiate trip
And as invasively vulnerable
It was also so memorable
As we looked deep into each other
I looked in and saw your pupils, so bottomless and opaque
I saw the crystalline tears form from your heartache
And I wondered, what is it you see in me
Tell me oh looker into the key hole of my soul
What is it you see in the blackest of holes
That I know as my heart
Tell me what stories you see between the twinkle of me eyes
Please don’t listen into the lies
I’ve had to tell myself, just to sleep at night.
Lost wanderer, why won’t you look away
Why won’t you relinquish me from your gaze
Tell me what it is you see, ‘cause I can’t see it for my self
Tell me my stranger, what you see
Tell me if it’s the same sad story
That I’ve seen in you
I don’t know how much of your stare I can take any longer
The opiate in my brain continue to feel stronger
I feel everythingness, yet I feel nothingness
As I look into your eyes
And you look into mine
We now know the deepest parts of each other
Opia what have you done
You’ve broken down my walls so now everyone
Can see inside of me, can see my insecurities
You were supposed to take all the pain away
But now the feelings that I feel, I want them to stay
Opia, what do I do
Now as your gaze fades away from me
The truth is, I don’t want it to leave
Because now, you’ve opened the window to my soul
Oh Opia
Opia
How did you manage to make me whole?

- Comment from author about the poem: I found the word Opia in the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, once I read the definition of the word I thought about what it would be like to experience this phenomenon. That is when I wrote this poem. If you like this piece you can find snippets of more like it on my instagram page @dannanicole_abril.

Great write
WELCOME TLD ~ Thanks for a challenging first poem made me think about OPIA ~ The ambiguous intensity of looking someone in the eye which can feel both invasive and vulnerable. Like peering through a (key)hole in the door of a house ~ able to tell there's someone there ~ but unable to tell if you're looking in or out ! Your elegant poem ~ describes that perfectly ! Thanks for sharing ~ more please ~ Yours BRIAN
