We were all in the Scouts and the Guides
So we all learned a lot about nature's ways and things
The flowers and trees ~ the animals and birds and bees
The reasons for the Seasons and why the insects have such lovely wings !
Autumn was our favorite season ~ going camping
Watching leaves change ~ green to yellow ~ red and brown
Hand in hand ~ all through the wild woods tramping
More sensuous than sweaty discotheques in Town !
We boys were all Science Majors
So we knew why leaves rotated in their pigments
We shared our truths with Girls but never strangers
The pigments and their structures were real and never figments !
CHLOROPHYLL is green and throughout nature seen
ANTHOCYANINS red ~ when a leaf goes brown it's dead
Leaves of purple and of blue are a much rarer hue
CAROTENOIDS are yellow and with red ~ they produce an orange fellow !
MAPLES have the finest colors in New England in the Fall
ASPENS in Colorado give the best display of all
So all green leaves must change despite defiance
Deciduous leaves are all transformed by Science !
For me a knowledge of the color changing process
Strengthens my faith in God ~ His beauty and His purpose
Order and design ~ are daily seen in colors in the Sea & Earth & Sky
Science must ask questions and try to reason ~ WHY ?
Leaves open ~ photosynthesise and color change and die
The miracle is greater now that we know HOW and WHY !
The scientific reasons for the rainbow colored leaves
Nature's mysteries from GOD for Science to perceive !

The season in which I was born..
Your poem took me back to when I was 6 years old, I lived near a park where there were many trees at that time in 1986.. How I used to love collecting leaves and conkers..
There were many trees then and it saddens me that most, if not all have been cut down now..

It is true that in a Large City there seem to be fewer trees and more concrete. I'm 33 (you are a similar age) and I think in the last few years with higher temperatures and more rain the leaves have stayed on the trees longer so the colours in Old England rival those in New England ~ Do you agree ?
