Sick of having to compromise
My morals and beliefs
I’m sick of institutionalised
Corruption and deceit
Decisions, decisions; ‘it’s all fair’ you see,
But ‘fair’ isn’t fair, between you and me.
No pain, no gain, earmarked again,
But what else do you expect?
You’re a tiny fish in the shark’s domain,
There’s no such thing as respect.
Word hard, lie harder, that’s the motto
Be the best act around
Tell them ‘there’s always tomorrow,’
‘Opportunity abound’
Decisions, decisions; ‘it’s all fair’ you see
But ‘fair’ is unfair, between you and me
No pain, no gain, earmarked again,
But what else do you expect?
You’re a tiny fish in the shark’s domain
There’s no such thing as respect.
Bite your tongue and swallow your pride,
It’s all part of the game.
They say ‘your turn will come in time’,
But how long can I wait?
Delusions, Illusions; it’s not fair you see,
Enough is enough, if you ask me.
No pain, no gain, walk out again,
‘Cos what else do you expect?
Just a tiny fish in a shark’s domain,
Life is too short for regrets.

- Comment from author about the poem: A simple one to start off with since I'm new, based on an experience of disappointment I had a short while back :)

WELCOME SABRE ~ THANKS for you first poem ! Itis elegant in both its structure and its meesge ! Liverpool has a great tradition o poets and you are no exception ! Classical poetry is reinforced bt repetition and the doulet ~ at the nd of vs 1 3 & 5 starts with the refrain DECISIONS ~ DECISIONS (1 & 3) and the in 5 DELUSIONS ~ ILLUSIONS. Then each verse is joined by a refrian NO PAIN ~ NO GAIN ~ Awesome. The theme of you poem in something we all face in Life and Love ~ We are all TINY FISH in sharks domain and Life is too short for regrets. We can all empathise ! Thanks for caring and sharing ~ MORE PLEASE ~ Yours BRIAN
Thank you Brian! Yes disappointment is always bitter and yet is so common. This helped me somewhat to move on from the experience xx
This is amazing! I feel like it's hiding a deep meaning within it, I'm so excited to read more from your poems!
Thanks Kira! I'm working my way through so many of the other poems on this site now, I can't wait to read more of yours xx
Very relatable. Everything from "fair isn't fair" to "little fish in sharks domain." You're very talented. I'm not a critic nor articulate in my comments, but I was floored when you said in your comment this was simple. For having been in that situation for many years, simple, is what it is far from.
Thank you so much, that means alot to me - I wasn't sure how it would go down as a 'first' poem (first impressions and all) but I appreciate your comments. Keep sharing your own work too as you are also very talented! xx
I really love this poem, it is elegant and powerful at the same time. It is also very relatable, a lot of people will see themselves in this poem!
Thank you, Daniel 🙂 Yes, unfortunately it is a sad thing but we all experience such bitter disappointment and frustration in some part of our lives at some point xx
