I was thinking, just the other day,
Over the years, the pets I’ve had.
Just an average bunch of mammals,
Nothing considered very rad.
These loving creatures were part,
Of my childhood to future days.
Whether Holidays or vacations,
They participated in various ways.
Jed, our dog, a friendly mutt,
Of Collie and other mix,
Textbook buddy, who loved whipped cream,
Wide-eyed at the spoon to lick.
Mini, our cat, had three kittens,
By her side, they remained.
Mini, herself, out lived them all,
Until as a ghost she returned.
I swear I would see her on the couch,
Next to my Mother, when knitting.
So surprised, I looked a second time,
Mini then gone, no longer sitting.
Since then, I moved and married,
Two kids with pets of their own.
At Christmas I got a Hamster,
In a cage, I brought him home.
His type is known as Golden,
So, fluffy, small, petite.
Kids gave him the name “Homey”
His death really impacted me.
Precious one, my Greyhound dog,
A rescue, is what they say.
From day one, she became my friend,
Best buddie, best pal, my Grey.
The affect my Grey had on my life,
Is something I will never forget.
Gone now, but patient, I picture her,
Waiting for me at Heaven’s Gate.
I left out some of the other pals,
Fishes, a budgie, or parakeet.
Feathered, four-legged or not,
All of them were very sweet.
Today my home, so quiet,
No pets to care for anymore.
Memories and pictures are all that’s left,
And, the scratches on furniture and floor.

Our pets are our family, too! It's great to see poetry dedicated to them; my cat JuJu is my baby! She is always there for me; always has been silent and strong since the day I adopted her and will be, I know, until death parts us. Lovely work; very uplifting; happy Christmas to all the pets out there keeping us strong and making us happy! xx
Thank you so much for telling me about your JuJu. She is lucky to have such a loving Mom. I miss my Grey everyday. She was a wonderful friend and companion.Yes! Happy Christmas to our pets who love us so unconditionally! Thanks so much again for the comment.
Wonderful tribute to our furry friends
Thank you very much Tony!
Welcome
Very nice poem. I remember the reaction I had once to a hamster dying when I was about 18. It was horrible. Had it forever. Can you imagine? Now I just keep to fish. lol Very good topic.
Thanks so much. I appreciate it. The Hampster we had was so cute and funny. He passed away in my hands. I was keeping him warm as I knew he was near death. So, I cried for two days. I am glad that my kids have grown to appreciate animals as a result. Thanks again.
I still think about my dog Bonnie from when I was a kid, and I still miss her! Great write!
Oh Bonnie! I just love that beautiful name. Thanks for telling me this. I appreciate your comment!
Our two dogs just got their Christmas Collars, a tradition my wife started. Neat poem.
That is great. I once put an antler headband on my Grey, but she was having not of that! I bet the collars are very festive! Thanks Augustus!
I have never owned a dog or cat personally (only a rabbit & a guinea pig) but I understand animals play a large part in many families🙂 Lovely poem!
I had two rabbits, too. So soft and cuddly. They are just as loving and I am sure you have funny stories about your pets. Thanks for the comment!
