Because the temperature was 12C (54F) and the Oxygen (15%) we were able to
Step out on to the surface of CYGNUS 3 without Bulky Space Suits or an Oygen supply
Because of the abundant FLORA it was like visiting another Continent on Planet Earth !
One major difference was the color of the Landscape and the unpolluted atmosphere
The absence of technological artefacts or Buildings. Additionally because we had been
Reared on spectacular SF Films ~ We regretted there were no CYGNURIANS to greet us !
Our Space Craft ~ SWAN SEVEN ~ was controlled by four experienced Astronauts (2M ~ 2F)
Who were single (or divorced) and childless. The ten Colonists (of whom I was one) were
Five engaged or married couples without children and reproduction was forbidden in flight.
We were aged between 21 & 24 before the flight and were now between 27 & 30 !
We were all graduates ~ mainly in Science & Technology but also in Medicine Art & Music.
The Colonists from America (2051) Russia (2052) and China (2053) were all "Couples"
And Graduates in appropriate disciplines. It was agreed that English be the LINGUA FRANCA.
The date (AD) in brackets is the estimated date that they would arrive on Cygnus 3.
On landing were three priorities Water ~ Food ~ Shelter and Sources of Minerals.
Potable Water was as abundant as in the Temperate regions of Planet Earth ~ There were
edible plants "vegetables" "nuts & fruit" and fish and birds. There was an absence of ......
Land Animals and (to our regret) no Intelligent Beings similar to Man ~ The planet was in
An early stage of Development and Evolution whic was of great Scientific Interest to us all !
We sent extensive report and visual images back to Earth but remember it took FIVE YEARS
For a message to arrive and another FIVE YEARS to get a message back. We also communicated
Regularly with the American Space Craft (SWAN EIGHT) which was only ONE LIGHT YEAR distant !
Our job a the Pioneer Colonists was to erect housing (see visual) which we has brought with us
One unit per couple ~ The four Astronauts would continue to on a modified SWAN SEVEN.
The living units were basic and powered by SOLAR PANELS and WIND TURBINES we had brought.
We need protection from wind and weather and birds and insect life ~ we had a lot to learn !

- Comment from author about the poem: As the PIONEER COLONISTS on a new Planet we faced many of the problems faced by the PILGRIM FATHERS in America ! The big difference was we did not have to deal with an Indigenous Population which could have been very very hostile to the Innocent Arrivals from an unknown Planet Earth. Because the first cohort were all UK Citizens (although from different ethnic backgrounds) we knew how to fish and fish & fowl are a key factors in the UK diet ! We needed to establish Agriculture (we has brought seeds) and ensure we all had a balanced diet ~ potable water and breathable air. The gravity of CYGNUS 3 was 90% that on Earth so the chemistry ~ biochemistry ~ physics ~ metreology and plant and animal structure was similar to Planet Earth so adaption did not pose any insurmountable problems ! This was SCIENCE FACT not SCIENCE FICTION and the Terrestrial Electromagnetic Spectrrum of Energy ~ Radio Waves ~ Micro Waves ~ Infrsred ~ Visible ~ Ultraviolet ~ X-rays ~ Gammarays prevealed in CYGNUS 3 just as they did on Earth. Our task ~ in our first year (A Cygnus was 200 Cygnus Days = 400 Earth Days) was to prepare the Panet to receive the American & Russians & Chinese as the arrived over the next three years ! We had also established (from Terrestrial observation) that the were Four Seasons of 50 Cygnus Days each Which we christened VENUS (Spring) MERCURY (Summer) EARTH (Spring) and MARS (Winter) in honour (and memory) of the SOLAR SYSTEM ! I like it all except that reproduction was forbidden in flight. That had to be difficult. Heh, heh. I see an upcoming novel here. Well done.
Well "A" in some SF stories where the flight iseven longer they do reproduce in the Space Craft and some of the older ones even die in Space ~ but the logistics of dealing with birth and neonate in a space craft are inconceivable (excuse the pun !) Thanks for your positve comment ~ BRIAN
