La Espalda de Mi Madre (My Mother's Back)

Augustus

La Espalda de Mi Madre

La espalda de mi Mamá
Se inclina para levantarme,
Se sienta para regañarme
Se vuelve para escudarme
Espera para escucharme
Se endereza para defenderme
Suda para alimentarme

La espalda de mi Mamá
Se tensa cuando me avergüenzo de ella
En su falda campesina.
Pero me da almuerzo por cierto
Y no me falta la cena.
Se encoge cuando le maldigo
Pero continúa llamándome querido.

Ahora estoy encarcelado,
La soga alrededor del cuello.
Espero que no me vea aquí Mamá
De su lugar de gracia en el cielo.

My Mother's Back

My Mama's back
Bends to lift me
Settles down to scold me
Turns to shield me
Waits to listen to me
Stands straight to defend me
Sweats to feed me

My Mama's back
Tightens when I am ashamed of her
in her plain country skirt.
But for certain it (she) makes lunch
and I never miss dinner.
It (she) cringes when I curse her
But continues to call me my dear.

Now I am imprisoned
The hangman's knot around my neck.
I hope you cannot see me here Mama
From your exalted place in heaven.

  • Comment from author about the poem: 7 years ago I began studying Spanish as a challenge, to be able to communicate with an increasing percentage of the U.S. Population, and also as a way to avoid Alzheimer's by keeping the mind active. Another challenge was to write a poem in that language. A mother's love is unending despite all.

Mil gracias señor. Interesting for you to say. I had a friend from Guatemala read it yesterday and he felt it reflected a Latin sentiment. Thanks.

Thanks Chrissy. Somewhere I read on MPS that other languages are acceptable but only with translation. The one in Spanish rhymes. Merry Christmas.
