Moments

Augustus

A moment of devastation

Millimeters on Roentgen examination

Within the sweet softness of her breast

Between rib cage and image plate pressed

Surgeon search

Second opinion

Plans emerge

Pathology dominion

Not a moment of hesitation

To bravely face radical mutilation

But fate decided all

The malignancy was small

Chemo avoided

Scar warnings

Team divided

Waiting haunting

Daily moments of radiation

Facing threats of burned skin

She drove alone with determination

To fight the fight and win.

Yearly moments of trepidation

Each mammogram her life decides

She warrants admiration

My amazing incredible bride.

  • Comment from author about the poem: My wife had a lumpectomy 2 years ago for invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast. I was ill and she had to drive herself daily for weeks of radiation following surgery. Fortunately all went well and subsequent tests have all been negative.

I have such respect for you, Augustus. You have captured exactly the world a woman lives in under these circumstances. I do not know what else to say except may she continue to have negative results.
