This is I

cynah Rae

A prisoner of society

Segregated by hate an inequality

Drawn into the darkness of the earth,

Where peace and unity do not exist

This is I

A child born into a loveless marriage

Scarred by the endless torture and abuse,

The tears and burdens her mother carries,

Forever in pain, in pursuit of happiness

A life she has only dreamed but is out of reach

This is I

A boy forced to be a man

No choice of his own

Speaks when spoken to

And remains a statue when his father is home

Watching his every step

Fearful of his father’s rod

All he does is say yes, no

and nod

This is I

A mother made redundant

My suffering passed on to my children

Working for every bite

Tired and alone, my children cry at night.

Living an unknown destiny

Society’s greed had led me to poverty

A mother with a broken household

This is I

A young girl who wears her heart on her sleeve

Longing to be loved, the way she has loved

A heart that’s been broken

A life that’s been wounded,

Hard to forget, her memories are still within

Cast into the shadows of lies and deceit

Nowhere to turn

The fury of a woman scorned still burns.

A girl who no longer believes in love

This is I
