My career hath made me oh so jaded.
I'm well aware of why I so hate it.
This is a story of which I must tell,
And free myself of this hell.
Not rain, nor sleet, nor snow
Will slow the seeking of their Norco.
These people have become so weak
They don't even care that they've begun to stink.
They mustn't feel so all alone
Several are also seeking their Suboxone.
When did our world become so chemically dependant?!
There must be an end to it.
No wonder everyone has become so crazy.
They all became so incredibly lazy.
Easier to pop a pill everyday at 3
Than to deal with their own reality.
Oh, things aren't going how you hoped they would have been?
How about we give some benzodiazepines!
Have a little pain after your fall?
How about 120 Tramadol!
Oh! You broke a bone?!
Then you must have Oxycodone!
But not just for a day or two,
That simply won't do!
Take it two months just to say you did,
Then we'll give you some Dilaudid!
You see things are difficult such as death,
disease, pollution.
But taking pills is not the solution.
If you have trouble sleeping at night
Try getting off your butt and go for a hike.
Some exercise will help you achieve your REM.
No need to take that Zolpidem.
When did our world become so chemically dependant?!
There must be an end to it.
No wonder everyone has become so crazy.
They all became so incredibly lazy.
Easier to pop a pill everyday at 3
Than to deal with their own reality.
Afraid you may no longer be a size three?
Then don't forget your Phenteramine!
Then you'll surely be skinny as a rail,
Even if your heart begins to fail.
Those kids of yours are not calm at all!
I think they need some Adderall.
Can't you see they just need some attention!
Stop giving them all of that Ritalin.
When did our world become so chemically dependant?!
There must be an end to it.
No wonder everyone has become so crazy.
They all became so incredibly lazy.
Easier to pop a pill everyday at 3
Than to deal with their own reality.
Now please understand,
There are many who need help every now and then.
But I feel certain
It's not as many as who have come to rely upon them.
Every prescription drug has its place
But they are over prescribed to the point of disgrace.
So even if you're in mourning
Remember they may become habit forming.

- Comment from author about the poem: This is not intended to offend anyone who has a mental or social disorder (or any other condition for that matter) that truly needs and relies upon medication. It is simply the view of someone who works behind the counter and sees the over use and abuse of prescription drugs. It is a very alarming reality.

Wonderful flow! I appreciate your clarifying comment. Even when one really needs help with a condition, the legal prescriptions can have such incredibly bad side effects. Damned if you do, damned if you don't. -- phoenix
That's so true. The physicians tend to keep patients on medications longer than needed. Most of these medications are intended for short term use but they are allowed to stay on them much longer than that. Then dependencies develop. It is tragic.
All going well at corporate headquarter double high profit's being reported. very well done!
Thanks so much! Oh yes the numbers they crunch. And don't even get me started on pushing vaccinations!
They have become quite the pharmacy sensation.
An excellent poem full of truth. I worked with drs and now stay at home with kids. Bravo!! This deserves a blue ribbon!
Thank you so much!
Excellent write much truth in your words
Thank you!
Welcome
I always felt bad for pharmacists as they had such a confined space. I believe it is easier for docs to hand over unnecessary antibiotics and pain killers than argue with the client. Perhaps they feel he will just go some where else to get it. Very well done.
Thank you so much. I agree with you completely. I am not saying being a Doctor is easy by any means but they do need to take more of a stand for what is right. It is much easier to just keep writing prescriptions and taking ones money than it is to say no you don't need this anymore.
Very well written and excellent job rhyming with such technical words. The reality of your well-written poem is so true. 90 percent of the people I work with are on some kind of anxiety or attention-deficit drugs. I, fortunately, am not one who needs that kind of "support." I think people today, do somewhat talk themselves into needing medications because they are as you say so well in your poem, too lazy otherwise. And, doctors do want to throw pills at patients today. Great subject matter you have tackled here!
I so appreciate your kind words! When I first began working in the pharmacy I really enjoyed it. I felt like I was helping people, that was in 22 years ago. Today I feel like a drug dealer. It gets harder every day to watch so many people loose control of their lives and feel like I have had a small part in it. I have just recently enrolled in school so I can do something else one day but unfortunately it will take me forever since I can only take one or two classes at a time. Raising 3 kids and working makes school hard to fit in but one day it will pay off.
You have nothing to feel bad about. Your job, from what I have seen, is so stressful, but very, very necessary! You are working to support your family. You did not write those prescriptions that I agree, may be mostly unnecessary. Returning to school is always a good approach for anyone who wants to make a change. Good luck in your endeavors! And, 3 kids is a huge responsibility! I wish you the very best!
Thanks you so much for the encouragement!
