Forgetting A Song

Izzi Lynn

Forgetting a song is like losing the door to a memory, because every song holds memories within it. The chords and the words hold all the sins and the charities of that time. Just two notes can send you sliding back through time to a sunset or a sunrise or a hug or roses or garbage. A past lover, a caring father, an old best friend, a meaningful sister. Perhaps it'll send you to when you were scared and that song was your tether, or perhaps to when you were so happy you couldn't breathe.

You see, EVERY song holds these memories within their rhythms and their notes. So never, ever forget a song.

  • Comment from author about the poem: A couple days ago, my friend asked me if it was bad that she rarely (if ever) forgets a song, and I couldn't help but reply that it wasn't, because songs are memories. I've actually been trying to put it into words for quite some time, and that question jarred me into this. In my belief, music can capture a moment, so that whenever you hear that song you're taken back to that time. Sometimes it's dulled from listening to that same song in different situations, but sometimes it isn't and when you hear the song the memory plays as clear as day.
