The Mask

rrodriguez

When a man decides

that to live in this society,

he must wear a mask,

An unremovable,

Unchangeable,

Mysterious;

a fully adaptable mask,

To blend in any place,

with anyone without being noticed,

to hide who he really is,

He forfeits his being

becomes a fake, and

he loses his identity.

  • Comment from author about the poem: This poem came to me as an idea one of my students gave to me. He loves to write essays and he wrote a short reflective essay which I turned into a poem. Many of us live behind a mask; there's no authenticity.

    It is so different for many people to be who they truly are. I have lived most of my life just being me, but I suppose at some point or another we ALL put on a mask. It may be for a job interview, first impression, or simply to make a situation easier to survive. I truly believe that we should be ourselves. True to heart.
    Nice!

    Poignant and precise! I wear a mask to escape notice, been so often judged harshly for being myself. -- phoenix
