Faceless Child

NB

Last night, the same old dream began

A room with no view

& I've seen that faceless child again

Was it me, or you?

It carried the spirit of twenties, so pale

A fading landscape

Like a memory with one wrong detail

Humming on the tape

& I was so afraid to talk

I don't even know what would he say

Was it me, or was it you?

In a different life, finding a different way

I was afraid to look at him

Afraid to know I was designed to fail

& you were finally given a chance

A much better life to inhale

I was so afraid to learn

That it wasn't a dream at all

But a vision of what's to be

Just me... or you... prepared to fall

But maybe it's all I've known so far

A new cut to remind of every old scar

Maybe I've just desired to go wild

Trapped in the image of that faceless child

Maybe I was born to wish not to care

About any war that we declare

& I'm waiting for each flower to get plucked

To learn I was designed to self destruct

Last night came a child I won't forget

Carrying autumn in his soul

Was it me, or you? The child I've met

A picture of a half without a whole
