Crosses by the road

Tris Eaton

Driving home
I saw a cross
On the side of the road
There were words
I'm assuming a name
Of someone
Who is now lost
Lost from their family

It's so sad
To think about
Someone leaving home
Or going there
Probably like
Any other day
And then BAM
They're gone
Gone from this world

I sit in the car
And think about
What might have happened
To this person
And their family
Some I know
Because I've heard
The stories on the news

Then I think
What if that was me?
If that was my name
On that little
Wooden cross
By the side of the road

  • Comment from author about the poem: Saw a little Wooden cross By the freeway today. I've seen wooden crosses by the side of the road before and it is so sad, especially knowing what had hapoened, just to think about how this affects people. Losing someone without any warning at all.

Very poignant write. There seem to be so many tributes by the side of the roads in this day and age.
