Her Beach

Will Hiltz

Her Beach

It had been fifty years

since she came to the island

and first walked

her beach

those years forgotten

but the place remembered

a lifetime of walks on this sandy stretch

the night’s tides bringing new shells each dawn

with sea breezes fresh on her face

rich odors of life and rotting death

shrieks of gulls and crash of breakers

and in nights past the Pleiades or

moon

low on the horizon

and now

through the dunes

that long ago received

the scattered ashes of her beloved

Bill

now forgotten

through those dunes one last time

her two sons - also forgotten

help her get to

her beach

remembered still
