Elegy I for the death of Leonard Cohen

Andrew Charles Forrest

Who's going to sing now Leonard's gone?

Who'll speak the truth about everything that's wrong

He could make it sound like it was just a song

But if you listened really carefully he brought us all along

He said there are cracks in everything

He said that's how the light gets in

He wrote profoundly and we believed in him

He spoke his words but we heard him sing

He quashed the angry and stirred the tame

He transcended language and snubbed the blame

He saw beauty in disfigurement and knew their names

He sang for the poor lost and lame

So who's going sing now Leonard's gone?

Where will the light in the dark come from

For the hopeless the empty and the forlorn

Who is going to sing now Leonard's gone?

  • Comment from author about the poem: I am glad we still have his shadow in his songs But "who'll make me think new thoughts now Leonard has gone" Was a question I was asked recently and it made me wonder the same. Does anyone else miss him? I know you do...

This song carries his memory dear poet and those who can remember more will do so owing to you and your tribute - a very inspiring read.

Honestly, was not familiar with his work. But checked him out on you tube. He was a poet and put his poems to music. Many have thoughts about world events. Your poem is a lovely tribute.

A fine and fitting tribute Andrew to the late, great Mr. Leonard Norman Cohen... No man other than my own Father has had such an influence on me personally my friend... I had the privilege of seeing him live on 9 occasions and he honoured me shortly after my Father passed in 2012 by writing to me and sanctioning the use of his words "some men should have mountains" , etc etc within my eulogy ...... a great man indeed.....
