The Last Goodbye

Garry

He was a kind man, softly spoken,

but never lost for words.

I knew him well,

but wished I'd known him better:

we had so much to do

and thought there would be time

to do them later.

This, sadly, wasn't  true.

But maybe they're important

these things we leave undone

They could be what keep us strong

and standing tall.

For who knows?

If we'd done all of them

there might be nothing left at all.

Sad but true Garry that the kind and softly spoken often have much more to tell. You will his good qualities stored in memory for always and as your poem relates things left undone maybe there for a reason. An endearing read .

That entire last stanza is the heart of your poetic remembrance. I had never considered the importance of things left undone. Reading this was like Wow! a whole new outlook on life's little quirks. Loved it.

We all have memories, which is good., , but sometimes it's doing the things you didn't do that allows helps you move on.

We remember uncompleted things more than we remember completed things.
I think that's why we remember certain people more than others, because of things we intended but never did, or things that were just left unresolved.
            It's called the Zeigarnik effect.
            Sorry for your loss.

Perhaps you could do those things alone in remembrance of him . After my father died I went fishing alone on the lake he grew up on as a boy , fished as a man and later left in memory to me his being in every creek and point and mountain . As I passed by I felt his soul accompanying me and comforting me and letting me know he is never gone .
