My Nightmare

Mandi

WAKE UP!

Opening my eyes panic rushes over me

Before I can catch my breath I see you

You're laying there, sleeping, without a care in the world

It was just a dream, you're still here

But I'm left with this uneasy feeling

I know soon you have to go

Laying next to you is so comforting, it's safe

I won't take my eyes off of you

I'm afraid if I do you'll disappear

Watching you is peaceful

I find myself smiling so easily

You are like a breath of fresh air

I can't help but breathe you in and be entranced

I place my hand upon your chest

I can feel your heartbeat drumming against my finger tips

I lay back down your heart playing music in my mind

The warmth of you, the sound of you breathing, the feeling of your heart beating

It lulls me back to sleep

I wake up with you still fresh in my mind

Beaming from ear to ear I lean over to kiss you

But....now...you're gone

  • Comment from author about the poem: My husband is in the armed forces. One day, before one of his deployments, I woke up and saw him lying there. I knew that the upcoming deployment was going to be harder this time and I found myself writing this down.
