There it stood,
Twenty four floors
Of burnt blocks.
Blackened holes
Of peoples homes.
They were warned!
The authorities were told
This would happen!
But did not listen.
People have died!
Homes are gone!
This was preventable!
But the option taken,
To refurbish the block
Was the cheapest.
The lives lost meant nothing,
Meant nothing,
To those who had the power,
The power and the money
To prevent this disaster.
As I look
I see the blackened windows
And realise
That I am looking,
At open graves.

- Comment from author about the poem: This should not have happened, the authorities had been told that this would happen but chose to ignore it. This is so sad but the community came together to do what they could but the Local Council in the richest Borough in the UK were conspicuous by their absence!

such sad news it bought tears to my eyes. so unfortunate, and most of the people in the block died. very few survivors and they can't even give us a list of names of who's missing.
you have made another tear come to my eye with this wonderful write.
Thanks Kevin, yes it is so sad, I too was in tears.
I wouldn't like to live any higher than about the 4th floor now. I would feel trapped, even before this sad event. Though when very young I used to live on a 14th floor.
Wonderful tribute poem, Goldfinch! Captures the raw truth of this world
The truth is often raw but some do not want to see it.
