Fits tune: St Francis Xavier
('My God, I love thee, not because')
Based on a prayer by
St Thomas Aquinas, 13th Century
********
Give me, O Lord, a steadfast heart
True to you in each part
Which no unworthy affections
Drags me down, nor you shuns
Give to me an unconquered heart
Which no troubles can start
To wear me out, to bring me low
But I your presence know
Give to me too a heart upright
And pleasing in your sight
May no unworthy purpose tempt
Me aside, nor contempt
Bestow on me also, O Lord
My God, your living word
Understanding to here know you
The only God and true
And diligence to here seek you
Wisdom to find you through
Events of life, and [give me too] faithfulness
To embrace you, me bless

- Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 8686 metre (Common Metre = CM). Hope this is not too disjointed. I found the original prayer in a book from just over 20 years ago. I blew the dust off it and found a bit of treasure in it!

may i bless you also? a very touching poem x
Thanks K.
Amen. I have read the poem at Church a few years ago.
Thanks G. Ahh, you know the original. Well, we was both there in 1066, the 11th Century, so by the 13th Century it was probably 'modern' to us two! Erm you read Thomas' Summa Theologica? I haven't. It's a massive involved theological work. I've read snippets and quotes from it at times.
