OF NO CONSEQUENCE

Louis Gibbs

Are we all leading inconsequential lives?

Are any lives more, or less consequential than others?

What of consequence remains from any life lived?

By anyone?

At any time?

Ah, but what of the legacy of our great prophets,

One may protest.

And how is the world improved by their lifetimes,

Echoes the reply.

Has the world arrived at peace and understanding?

Brotherhood?

Unconditional love?

Certainly not!

So this soul, again, questions in anguish ...

Are we all leading inconsequential lives?

The answer, of course, would be of no consequence ...

Life simply is what it is, is it not?

Thanks for this thought provoking well written poem!
I happen to believe that NO life is inconsequential. Some touch maybe only a small circle around that life, while others influence many more. Like a stone thrown into a pond. The ripples keep on flowing outward and one does not know how far away they will touch something or someone. Remember the story about how the beat of a butterfly wing can change history? Any one of your beautiful, well written, and thoughtful poems could conceivable influence somebody way down the line of time. Who knows? Life is what it is, but it is made up of all of our thoughts and actions. Sorry, I kind of rambled on here. Was just supposed to be a comment on how good you are!

Your gracious ramblings are much appreciated, Fred. You are so correct in saying that our lives can touch others. We all touch each other's lives by sharing our deepest feelings in verse on this wonderful site, don't we. I am proud to be a part of this community of good souls like you.

You bring up a very interesting point. In the final analysis are we better off from the minds of the world's geniuses thought out history or are we the same as the consequence of the homeless bum on the corner? Great write!

It does make you wonder when you think about it, doesn't it? I see no significant evolution in human kind to speak of. Religions growing from the prophet's teachings have only served to divide us further. Breakthroughs in science have either contributed to the fouling of the planet or been twisted into more powerful weaponry ... so much for the geniuses. I can only conclude that, generally speaking, no single life is of consequence. Perhaps, as a species, our lives in unison could be of consequence to the world ... if only we could learn to exist in unison. Thanks for your thoughtful reply, Augustus.
