Artificial Flavoring

Kimberly Culpepper

I cant stand the person I used to be

That person was someone before you and me

That person was ignorant and knew nothing of the world which she lived

That person had her eyes open the moment you stepped in

You showed her how dark everything could be

You showed her the light when she thought there was nothing to see

She changed

You changed her

You made her realize how much more everything was

You made her dark thoughts become a permanent buzz

Now she's drunk on pessimism and anxiety and depression and self-hatred

She's drunk and she doesn’t want to get sober

This buzz you’ve created in her mind, she's grown used to it

She doesn’t mind the negative awareness that surrounds her

She thinks its who she is

She also thinks she isn’t real

She questions the life she lives and the thoughts she thinks and the religion she believes

She questions time

Is time real?

You asked her that

And now she just sits contemplating it

She just sits for hours

Tick tock tick tock

But wait is it really hours?

How can she know time is passing?

Time isn’t real is it?

Its artificial. Its man-made

But so is she

And if she is man-made then she probably isn’t real

And if she isn’t real then what’s the point?

She didn’t used to have these thoughts

You put them in her head and she cant get them out

She has changed

You have changed her

You changed her into me

You made me who I am

And I don’t know who I am without you
