Check Yourself Out

When you use self check-out,

I don't think you realize.

Exactly what you're doing,

Causing a downsize!

Even though it's quick

And faster for you,

Not knowing what you do.

You have cost someone a job,

For lots of people too!

That is part the problem

Of this modern technology,

I won't use their system

It's not who I want to be.

Causing people jobs

And losing salary,

That right there's the problem

Of self check-out can't you see?

I try to make aware

the people using these,

You are doing the job

Of future employees!

If you do continue

To use the new self check-out,

Costing young kids jobs

That is what this is all about!

Please don't use these

Is what I am asking you,

If your child needs a job

There would be none to do!

    So very true. Modern conveniences can save us time, but in the long run continue to replace the human with a machine. I'll remember this next time I'm at the check-out. Thanks for posting this excellent write.

    Same here in the UK - hate them and won't use them - love the poem but not only for this reason - it's also pretty darn good.

    Your poem describes a larger problem in the work force ... machines and robots replacing manpower. It is simply a fact of advancing technology that nothing is going to change, as much as we might bemoan it. Your poem touches upon the effect on the low skilled worker well, Edward!

    I refuse self-checkouts for the reasons you give Edward - a fine outcry against casting out human labour for the age of machines.
