My Life

John Prophet

How I
choose to live
my life.
I'm wired
at birth,
my personality
in place.
I'm sculpted
as a youth
my environment
had its say.
The combination of both
molded me
as artists molds clay.
With all this
in place
where do I go
from here?
What direction
in life
will I choose?
How much choice
do I really have?
Has the deck
been stacked
before I'm
on my way?
Look all around,
all types
are in play.
The complexity
of society
in full on
display.
Can I
will myself
away from the
mold that I am?
Am I
trapped
by the sculptor,
my part
in the play
determined,
I have little say?
I believe
if I focus
real hard,
I can fracture the mold
get out of its way.
I can over come,
move in a
different direction,
create
my own way.
Genetics and environment
certainly had
their say.
I believe
I can power
thru an creat
a better day.
Is it possible, though,
I'm just wired this way?

Wired? No. Molded? Yes. Every child is a fresh slate. A parent's job is to mold you into a decent person. The path you take in life is ultimately up to you, though. You'll have bits and pieces of everything you've been through in the past with you wherever you go. That's just how it is. Unless you're insane. Crazy people don't give no way no how, they just do stuff. Interesting philosophy. Keep up the work.

Nature vs nurture. We are a product of both. You are correct, how we are raised plays a large part of who we are. However, our genetic make up (wired) also plays a large role. Determines our sex our looks our personalities. Thank you for reading my work.

We come into this world, time and time again, the product of those many lives and experiences. In that regard I must respectfully disagree with Nicholas's take on coming in as a 'blank slate'. True, we are mentally programmed by parents and culture to fit in, but our basic nature and inherent wisdom come in with us, and remain the determining compass of our lives.
Yes, I believe we can "fracture the mold" and "create my own way", as you express the proposition so well. Why else would we have bothered to come back ... again? Splendid, thought-provoking poem!

        Thank you Louis.

Since we mere mortals with finite minds can not know all the infinite make possible. Therefore, anything is possible.

Your future lies there before you waiting only for your footsteps to make it worn path. But what some are not always taught is to plan your steps carefully so as not to regret them later in life. Very hard to do without the guidance of experienced elders. A very thought provoking write collinsjg. I can relate very well.
