AS A GIRL

Diane

I can remember as a girl,

fearless places surrounding me.

Smiles so bright from faces new

to calm my worry easily.

I can remember as a girl

a freedom loose, emotionally,

contained by figures I know now

as ghosts who haunt and frighten me.

I can remember as a girl

my individuality,

a relaxed disciplinary,

to guide me through maturity.

I can remember as a girl

such fun with life’s virginity.

Exploring opportunity.

Finding my way quite happily.

I can remember as a girl,

childish games,

flared dresses that swirl.

Kick the can, catch the ball,

life wasn’t complicated at all.

But,

awareness came swiftly,

with puberty,

this girl running carefree,

lulled into a false security

I don’t remember ‘this’ world so vividly?

Eyes wide open,

now I see,

all the hatred in my world.

I wish now as an adult new I could remember as a girl.

Nothing more beautiful than the innocence we come in with ... the pure expression of our soul, pre programmed. Well expressed in this fine poem, willsd!

Our perspective always changes from days of youth to the days of adult responsibility. Good work.

This is quite lovely. The finale is harsh yes and contrasts beautifully. Raises an anger in me for those who abuse the innocence of childhood. Lovely writing and lovely picture too.

The older we get, the more cognizant we become, it is a beautiful peace, truly beautiful!
