sometimes
poetry is as simple as
the perfect smile
of the boy on the bus
or the way the light catches
a certain flower in the garden
and how if you're lucky
you can see this twice-a-day spectacle
over your bowl of cornflakes
sometimes
poetry is only as sad as
stealing whiskey from your parents
putting it in your coffee with your
friends, even though it's only 10am
or the way the smashed up shards
of glass after an accident
look like glitter on the road
as you drive past on your way to work
sometimes
poetry is as romantic as
noticing the scar above his eye
where he got hit aged 13
and how he can laugh when you talk about it
or how he reads your favourite book
and talks to you in a secret language of
quotes and one lines
because he knows it makes you smile
sometimes
poetry is as simple as the sea
