"Unknown"

Caroline J. P.

Who are you?

Do you know,

I don't know...

Who am I?

What am I?

I am human

That can mean many things...

I can be black or white,

I can be young or old,

I can be what you say,

Or be as I choose.

Who are we?

I mean as people...

We are judgemental,

We are racists and sexists,

But no matter what,

We are all equal.

We can be known to many,

Or no one at all.

We can work together,

Or against one another.

Let's just say we're "Unknown",

Unknown to one another,

And even...

Sometimes...

To ourselves.

You can't choose "what"

You are...

But you can choose,

"Who" you are.

So be yourself,

If no one likes you for you...

Then let them stay, "Unknown"

  • Comment from author about the poem: While in school, so many people were arguing and making fun of each other. After that day I decided when I got home I was going to write a poem and read it to all of my classes to remind everyone that we're all unique no matter what race, gender, sexuality, or culture we are.

WELCOME CAROLINE (NICE NAME !) Thanks for your fist poem ~ excellent "free verse" poem ~ well spaced and full of rhythm. As we get older (I'm twice your age) we do acquire an identity and become more set in our ways and less flexible ! I essence I love your advice TO BE OURSELVES ~ Yours BRIAN (UK)
