On safari
In a far off land
A beauty there
You’ll never understand
You’re a sportsman
A hunter in the wild
Your sights on target
Pull the trigger with a smile
Now a Lioness
With fatherless cubs
But you’re satisfied
As the ground senses a thud
The trophy on your wall
A fierce Lion’s head
May it haunt you at night
As you lay in bed
A nightmare of giant paws
Slashing through your flesh
Vengeful teeth upon your throat
Guilt of your own request
And who hears your cries for help
As the hunter becomes the prey
Does God hear you when
For his mercy you pray
Is the wild kingdom
Now a better place
And does the loss of one Lion
Show upon your face
One question of you Walter Palmer
What I’d like to know
Is who gave you the right
To cause innocent blood to flow

- Comment from author about the poem: Today and tomorrow I will post two animal related poems to follow up to wc's poem yesterday of "Rutting Buck". Recall if you will, Cecil, a lion that lived primarily in the Hwange National Park in Matabeleland North, Zimbabwe. Cecil was killed by Walter Palmer, an American "recreational" big-game hunter. Cecil was 13 years old when killed by Palmer in July of 2015. I was mortified by the reports of this lion being killed by this hunter. I immediately took to writing this poem on the behalf of Cecil and his family.

Good write about an awful killing. I cannot see the point in killing any animal for fun, it is murder!
Thanks Goldie, you're right, it is murder. But to a hunter it's just another day with a trophy for his wall. So very sad. Thanks for reading.
Yes I do recall this - a tragic event and your poem is great commentary on the barbaric act .
Thanks for reading Michael. It still bothers me to this very day.
A fine write AP, and with National Animal Day tomorrow (4th). Related to St Francis of Assisi. he talked to animals I believe, maybe plants too?!
We're the only species that kills for fun. Animals have to do so to eat.
Not exactly something to be proud of, and sadly, some humans are. Thanks for reading orchi.
It's dreadful. Many good folk tend to animals, conservation, etc. But in some cases all is well until man (mankind) comes along and mucks it up! Or ***** it up, to put it bluntly (sounds like 'mucks'!)
Yep, I'm in tune with your code of words. ; )
A sad reflection on the senseless killing of a lion. It seems the sport has now-days morphed into the senseless killing of people. Well written poem, A.P.
In many ways, its a senseless world we live in Louis. I remember when I was in my teens thinking that I couldn't imagine what it would be like when I'm much older. But what is going on in this day and age I don't think anyone could have imagined. And it gets really scary trying to imagine what the world will be like in the near future.
Very well written, AP. I never understood why people would want to kill animals for fun and sport. As Goldfinch said, it IS murder and should be banned.
I too am confused as to why anyone would want to kill animals. All I can figure is that man has been doing it for millions of years for survival, so now its like a grandfathered code of rights to be able to go out and conquer the wilderness, stand on the beast with one foot and the weapon used to kill it and show what a superior species he is. In other words, a egotistical maniac. Maybe that's what the nut in Las Vegas was thinking. It just sickens me that modern man has evolved to this. Thanks for reading Fred.
Very touchy subject in rural America, they love their hunting .... Me ? I am on your side I can't even imagine taking a life for fun .
And I'm on the animals side. Thanks for reading and commenting WL. ; )
A wonderful tribute, certainly stirs up thoughts.
Thanks for reading and commenting poetboy, ; )
