Clutching the ticket to his heart
He sadly watched the red light
The end of the train, depart
Slowly disappearing into the night
He had missed the train
again

Doh! Missed again. A fine write Fred. A meta-wotsit train. Oh, I can't say any words over 3 syllables. It's the sherry does it. lol.
Thanks Orchidee! I think I need to get some of that sherry too, since the more than 3 syllable words get me headaches!
Ooooh now this I can relate to Fred - - a missed train stands for so much in our busy lives. Great read.
Thank you Fay. I know it is usually a 'missed boat', but that would not have rhymed.
Yeah I have missed the boat on many things myself ... good write
Thank you WL, I guess we all have these memories of missed boats (or trains), and the accompanying 'what ifs'!
I'll go with Angel's comment of the next train is on the way. Better late than never. ; )
Thanks AP, you are right, there is always another train (or boat). But what, if your loved one was sitting on that departing train, waiting for you? 🙂
I'd tell the conductor, "Quick, catch that train". ; )
A fine metaphor of life's many missed opportunities. But yes, many more lives and many more opportunities will come along. A splendid poem, Fred!
Thank you Louis! One never knows, it could be a missed opportunity, or a missed disaster. Missing the train (boat) could be a good thing too!
Absolutely! Funny how that works out sometimes ... or rather, how our guides and angels see to it.
Exactly!!!
And that is why we need to follow that little voice in our head, or the gut-feeling, or whatever you wanna call it! If it says 'let the train go', no matter how we feel otherwise, or how worried we are to miss something, then we should let it go and feel good about it.
I've learned to pay that little voice a lot of attention ... give it a lot of respect. It's saved my ass more than once.
How many times I've missed that train.
Nice write Fred. Sometimes to miss the train is your best luck.
Thank you Malu! You are so right. See the comments between Louis and I above!
I sense there was someone on that train he wanted to meet. What with "ticket to his heart," and all. Or was it just a symbolic train (of love) that he missed and it will never return. A lot said in 5 lines and a lot of choices to be made. Good poetry. - Phil A.
Thanks for reading and your great comment!
I wanted to leave it wide open for the reader to see whatever they wanted to see in the poem. Could be a missed love, or simply a missed opportunity of some other kind. It is a fact of life that sometimes we miss the boat (or train) and somehow have to come to terms with it. If it happens again and again, maybe we have to re-evaluate our willingness to step into something new or different. Or maybe it is better for us to stick with what we know.
I do appreciate you thinking about it, that after all is the whole point of poetry.
We often miss trains in our life but we must always remember that another one will soon be coming. Good write.
Thanks Goldfinch! But if the next train does not go to the same destination? What then? 🙂
We get on it and try something new, the unknown may surprise us.
