TOP OF THE MOUNTAIN

lasergraph

(c) 2017 Edward York

I decided to climb the mountain.

I looked up at the peak.

The thoughts of challenges still ahead,

Made my knees grow weak.

Everyone said it was impossible,

And when I asked them why.

They said the difficulties were too great,

For me to even try.

So I heeded all their warnings,

And stayed safely on the ground.

Though I wondered what I was missing,

I still stayed safe and sound.

But one day while I was gazing,

Upon the beauty at the top,

I knew that all their warnings,

Would never make me stop.

So I gathered all my courage,

And then I made my plan.

I knew it was now or never,

Right here where it all began.

So I started moving upward,

With all the warnings in my head.

The summit kept on calling me,

And faded all my dread.

When I finally reached the summit top,

The beauty made me cry,

To think of all who missed it,

Because they would never try.

Edward, thank you for this very uplifting poem. It is so sad to see people held back by fear, or worry, or any other reasons, from achieving their potential. And if at first you don't succeed...try again!

Too many pay attention to those who couldn't make it and give their advice. Thank you.

Thanks L! I really enjoyed your poem. I have a son named Denali. We named him that because Denali National Park is where he was conceived. Denali (Mt. McKinley) is a most impressive sight. It's Inuit translation is 'the Great One". I hope my son can be a great one someday!

I know about Denali but have never seen it in person. Juneau is as far as I have been in Alaska. I can imagine it is a sight to see.
