Tune: Abbot's Leigh
('Glorious things of thee are spoken')
Hebrews 4 v.9-16
**********
A rest to God's people remains
Though 'tis not through our own gains
But resting from our own striving
Our own salvation to bring
Yet we labour, seek to enter
Rest through Him, He does confer
Salvation on us through Christ, He
By faith our true Saviour be
Living by the word of God sure
It is alive, whole, and pure
Sharper than any two-edged sword
Spoken by Him, He the Lord
Piercing, does divide asunder
Soul and spirit, brings wonder
Discerns thoughts, intents of the heart
Searches to our deepest part
All is open to His sight keen
Every creature great or mean
All is open and revealéd
To the Lord, our living Head
He sees all, none can be hidden
From His sight, and 'tis so then
That we have to come, to relate
To Him who knows every state
Yet seeing we have a high priest
Avails for greatest to least
Passed into the heavens, there He
Jesus, Son of God, He be
Let us hold fast our profession
Trusting Him, the holy one
For He not a priest unfeeling
To us, but us comforts bring
He can be touched with the feeling
Of our state, yes everything
Our infirmities, our weakness
He will help us, will us bless
For He was tempted like we are
He not distant, removed far
But no sin did He e'er commit
O'ercame temptations, each whit
Let us therefore come boldly to
The throne of grace, come, e'en you
That there we may obtain mercy
And find His grace, given free
He with love and with compassion
Shall succour us, help each one
Humbly pleading, His help needing
Trusting Him in everything
