Persevering Progressions

Tune: Cranbrook

('On Ilkley Moor baht'at)

(Also one tune to 'O for a thousand tongues to sing')

Philippians 3 v.13-15

********

I say that I have not attained

Not attained

To perfection as yet

Yet I my heart and mind have set

I labour on, desire whet

With Christ, His mighty power (x2)

Enabling each hour

For Christ He has each one here called

Has here called

And us He apprehends

He does see all our needs, them tends

His gracious favour lends

And so I do press on (x2)

Before me He has gone

One thing I do,  I do forget

Do forget

Those things which are behind

I reach forth, thus I seek and find

To things ahead, defined

I press toward the mark (x2)

To the Lord's voice I hark

Pressing towards Him, the high prie

The high prize

Of God, His high calling

To know Him here in everything

Worship and praise Him bring

So let us have this mind (x2)

Be to Him full aligned

Let us go on, and not stand still

Not stand still

Nor retreating backwards

But more of Him known, understood

Following Him, He good

'Til by His grace we all (x2)

Gain the prize of His call

  • Comment from author about the poem: Something a bit unusual. A hymn-poem in 8(3)686 666 metre. There is an optional 3-syllable second line to each stanza. It's is basically 8686 (Common Metre = CM) to Ilkley Moor tune! One can alternatively sing the x2 line three times, and omit the last line. Do you like this tune as a hymn-tune?!

OK, orchi, you already know how good a writer you are, but I will say it again: You are very good.
Now to the juicy part: When will the wedding be? Make sure you invite me and don't forget, I have to fly half way around the world, so give me early notice. You can be sure I will bring a suitable gift, but for now that is still a secret. Am looking forward to finally be meeting you and your lovely KP bride in person!

Thanks Fred. Erm, it's on Halloween (when else could it be?! lol). It'll be terrible, ghastly, full of botox, etc! heehee. See you there.
