The Beach With The Cave

Syd

On the wall it hung, a picture of cave on beach drenched in sun

It reminded us of better times, when we were young,
long before our mothers battle with alcohol addiction had begun

Dad would just get in the car and take us anywhere,
as long as the sun was shining we didn't care

Fast forward twenty years, through the battles, scars and tears

I wanted to find the beach with the cave I visited when I was just aged ten,
to relive those happy memories with my own children

In the car we drove and drove, until I finally found that sacred cove
The beach that reminded me of happier times, innocence, peace & love

Exploring rock pools and the cave, happy memories came flooding back with every crashing wave

Happiness, it seems can almost stop the clocks

I went about my day reminiscing happy memories amongst the jagged rocks

I only wish my mother could have been here now....
Perhaps it's possible that from up above and with smiles and love she is watching us somehow

The storm of her last turbulent years has given way to sunshine and happy smiles,
for now the fog has cleared and I can see for miles and miles

Too soon the day is over, to reach home we have a long car ride

My memories are refreshed and pure, just like the beach shall be after the receding tide

  • Comment from author about the poem: I think the poem pretty much speaks for itself. Myself and my kids set out to find a beach that I only visited once when I was a kid. I remember that day from when I was young as being almost perfect, before things started to turn to shit for a while.

  • Fay Slimm.

A very poignant read Syd - many times we need memories and this verse takes readers back to your own happy days - a favourite line for me was -- "Happiness, it seems can almost stop the clocks" - - I really agree that is what can happen. Thanks for sharing that cave and the long-ago beach-times with us Syd.

Well thank you Fay. I'm glad you enjoyed the poem. It was a special day for me, bringing my own kids to the beach with the cave. It took us almost a full day and a long journey to find. I even managed to replicate the photo that hung on my fathers wall. Thanks for reading, much appreciated - Syd

Super write, it is obviously a very fond memory and it will now be a special place to your children as well.

Thank you Goldfinch, it certainly will. In fact we've been back a couple of times and I intend to visit next year with my sister and neice. I know it holds a special place in my sisters heart too. Thanks for the comment. Take care - Syd

Hi James, thanks for reading and leaving feedback. I'm sorry that you have few fond memories of your mother. I guess you've just got to make the best of what you have. Play the hand you are dealt if you will. Nice to chat - Syd

Thanks again Santita, I'm glad you enjoyed the poem and I'm so glad I rediscovered that beach too. I wish I could upload the actual picture of it but it is too large (this pic is from Google) I'm glad you like my style. I tend to be a straightforward person.

        All the best - Syd
