If I crossed paths today
With my six year old self,
I wonder what I'd say.
Would I say
Enjoy these carefree moments
While you have the chance,
Once they're gone
Its like trying to catch smoke,
Catch smoke with your bare hands.
Or would I tell her
About all the cruel truths.
That this planet has more
Than sunshine and dandelions
Hidden behind the curtains.
Even though I have been
Educated an awful lot
Since the time when
Daisy chains were the
Hardest skill to master,
I would erase my life lessons
In a heartbeat
To see the world
Through her innocent eyes
Once again.

Skye, this is a beautiful and thought provoking poem. As a grandfather now I do have the privilege to once in a while see the world through young kids eyes (whenever we visit the grandchildren). And that reminds ME to look differently at the world again, at least to a degree. One cannot erase all these years of experiencing both the bad and the good.
Thank you Fred! Sometimes I really wish we could just erase all the bad we can now see in the world.
Great write sky. It reminds me of the song "Old Man" by Neil Young. I guess it's really about Neil's caretaker on his farm. But when I listen to the song, to me it's about a young man speaking to his older self. Listen to it on Youtube and see if it seems that way to you too.
Thank you AP! I will give it a listen 🙂
Well sky, that got me thinking about that song by Neil Young. And on my birthday (61) next month I'll post a poem inspired by the song "Old Man".
I look forward to reading it AP!
Such a great read - as an artist I have spent years trying to draw like a child - and I'm still trying.
Thank you Michael! Keep trying, I am sure one day soon you will!
