If I Ever Caught the Sun

Will Shootman

It’s going to be cold for a while now

Every breath of wind a vice grip on the alps of my ears

For the first few weeks I’ll wear what I always wear

But then I’ll coat in layers like paint on the wall of a bedroom repurposed

And come the wintry meridian I’ll begin

Shedding cotton and wool

And by May first, peel off January’s last

Last sundown at a reasonable time has passed

And if I ever caught the sun on its up-

-Well, at least

Noon will always be quite the same
