Tune: England's Lane
('For the beauty of the earth')
**********
Christmas contemplations share
Time of peace, good will, fine fare
Yet for many poverty
Still straitened their state it be
Chorus
Lord, look on us, have mercy
Come to us and set us free
Light of life, light of the world
Here love's banner is unfurled
Incarnation, God made man
Doing what no other can - Chorus
Comes to provide salvation
Children, women, men, each one
JESUS, Saviour, saves from sin
In Him each new life begins - Chorus
Fully human, full[y] divine
Taking on my state, e'en mine
As a human babe, there found
In a manger, praise resound - Chorus
Lord, we forget not the poor
They with us from shore to shore
Grant your power, to act, so
They love, practical help know - Chorus
For what use, we say, 'Be fed
And eat of your daily bread
And be clothed, keep warm always'
If they stay poor all their days? - Chorus
Though we cannot all needs meet
Some we can in Christ's name greet
Give of our substance and share
Tending poor with loving care - Chorus
Lord, meek and mild, yet a King
Needs of season we you bring
And through the year, diligent
Follow you, midst poor you went - Chorus

- Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 7777 metre, to a somewhat Harvest tune! We're over-sensitised this season, maybe, to charity appeals, etc. I've aimed to include all the year, all seasons, for we know people are not poor just at Christmas only. They don't suddenly become rich once a new year starts!
