Beavers

Lorna

The  beavers are gone

Perhaps the powers that be

Crushed their house

(It's just a pile of loose sticks now)

Beavers being a nuisance to manmade culverts

And civilization as we know it

They block them, the culverts, you see

In their eagerness to build

But all I know is that the beavers are gone

And the rushes blow alone in the wind.

  • Comment from author about the poem: At a fancy horse show grounds in Saugerties, NY - very beautiful land and property, well maintained - they got rid of the beavers - so that all the ultra rich that now people the horse shows wouldn't be offended by their untidiness.
