Carers Story

RebeccaRose.x

I greet you with a smile
you light up when you hear my name
For yes it hasn't been that long
But your carers back again

I get you up and get you dressed
I make you ready for the day
You've endless amounts of trust in me
Which I hope will never fade

We laugh the hours away together
We sing, we chat, we play
We even adventure out the house
But others don't always understand your ways

Payments are often blocked
With cars and other things
Furthermore there are no places
To toilet you in your sling

We are restricted by society
With what we get to do
And sometimes it's just impossible
To get places with you

Please people understand
We aren't trying to get extra care
We just ask for things to be in place
Which means we can be there

  • Comment from author about the poem: A simple pavement being blocked means we have to go in roads. For a wheelchair user the amount of time they spend in the road is longer and it\\\'s not easy to get out of the way quickly when a car comes. Also a lot of people can think that people with disabilities get certain privileges such as jumping queues in theme parks. This is true but they are there for a reason. But the main things people with disabilities and carers, like myself, ask for are : \r\nChanging places toilet (big enough for chair and includes a hoist) \r\nAccessible public transport that you don\\\'t have to book in advance \r\nAnd the ability to stay / get onto a pavement(sidewalk). \r\nWe ask for the ability to be included in society. \r\n\r\nIf you have thank you for taking the time to read this.

Good write Rebecca, many do not understand the need of those in care.
