Tune: Webb
('Stand up, stand up for Jesus')
Daniel 5 v.31-32
********
Babylon's time came, downfall
For one the Lord did call
Cyrus the Great, the Persian
He was the chosen one
To lead his army forward
Each heart to battle stirred
At God's command, He Sovereign
Through Him the victory won
It be impenetrable?
It be impregnable?
Great city full of evil
Thought it would go on still
For ever and for ever
And thinking so never
That they would be o'ercome there
But disaster their share
Consider fortifyings
Of this city, these things
Walled part was sixty mile round
With pride it did redound
One hundred [and] fifty feet high
How could one there draw nigh?
And eighty-seven feet thick
With solid stone and brick
See there upon the wall high
Four chariots go by
They four could fit abreast there
Space did not lack, impair
And round the wall a moat see
Thirty feet wide it be
Fresh water from Euphrates
Gave drink to the thirsty
But Persian army, they staid
Another canal made
To diver water, and so
A way in they did know
So there by God strong guided
A defeat they did bring
To each Babylonian
God Sovereign, He alone
For they too fed and sated
Supplies ne'er abated
Twenty years food was in store
They could not ask for more
Though so great, not long forbears
[Only] Around seventy years
Their days of power ended
They too much offended

- Comment from author about the poem: A hymn-poem in 7676.7676 metre. In about 539BC in the time of Daniel and his three companions, the Babylonian Empire was defeated by the Medes & Persian Empire. Some historical notes show the impossibility of overcoming Babylon by human power alone.

A history lesson in a hymn, are you at the sherry again. Very good write Orchi.
Thanks Gold. Yes, it's the sherry - and some study notes! Did we see those fortifications in person? Did we meet Cyrus?!
Orchi,
Enjoyed the read! Thereās a lesson in there to be learned for sure!! No matter how big and strong that wall is, strong WILL and DETERMINATION will win in the end!
~Laura~
Thanks Laura. But here it couldn't be done by human strength alone.
Totally agree, Orchi!
