Coping Alone.
A shadow, poised where the blow is to fall
transports and transforms
in its turning
as shot hits, making wife widow who learns
by authentic letter
but starts hopeful pretense.
A dream believed whole is but a fragment
transfixed and transient
in its racing
away from such real where tragedy faces
grave's mocking indifference
to wedlock's stark finish.
A battle-torn soul coping alone with grief
transacts and transmits
in its mourning
devotional vows should report prove false
yet she, believing he lives
weeps while cursing war's evil.

You always hit to the heart Fay. Bad enough to be a widow older but can't imagine how the young can handle it, especially because of a war death. Don't know how they make sense of it. I myself am an "Alzheimer's" widow who lives somewhere between him living and dying. It's a most other worldly place to be.
Oh Lorna this is most moving comment and I can only imagine how it must be to live in that "other worldly place" - - the subject of coping with risk of war-death hits hard when trying to put it in poetic words - the picture was its own inspiration. - - Thank you dear friend for the visit and for the sharing of personal heartache.
Good write Fay.
Thanks Orchi.
Hi Faye,
A heart-gripping piece, that flows really well with emotion.
M 🙂
Thank you dear poet-friend for the encouraging comment on my efforts to write on such emotional subjects.
Emotion torn piece - so well expressed.
We can only imagine the heartache and grief of such a young loss - - thanks for your comment Michael.
Indeed, what is the point of going to war if this is its harvest.
I so agree - - war's harvest has always been spillage of blood without end. Thank you for your viewpoint my friend.
Emotional and such a well written piece! Gripping! Very well expressed. Great write, Fay!
Am so grateful for your comment as you saw the message along with the picture of coping with grief such as war -loss dear Christina - -we can only imagine what it costs a young widow.
You truly do have the gift, Fay! Beautifully written with just the right amount of emotion.
