charlie is a veteran
of two train crashes
and a spot of incidental brain damage
a tiny bit
foul-mouthed
sister schmidt
is a Charge Nurse
german
a disciplinarian
the linen is stacked
according to straight lines
and tight rules
in sister schmidt’s ward
charlie
is having a word
you’re a f*****g old blurgl urgl
sister schmidt
with flannel and soap
in hand
is washing his mouth
no language like that
in sister schmidt’s ward
thank you
very
very
much

Hard times that can be mis understood..
A lot of the 'care' back then was personality driven, as I recall.
Poor Charlie!
This write reminded me of elementary school where Sister Mary M. was always ready with her ruler for poor Anthony!!! Anthony’s hands were so raw that he couldn’t write and for that he got more with from Sister Mary M’s weaponized hand!
HORRIBLE!

Ah yes, I remember the nuns. That, however, is in another memoir LOL. I have one for every occasion ...
Wonderful!
I’m enjoying the reads!
