My Baahstun Accent

Accidental Poet

My home, south of Baahston

A little drive but not too faah

Right near the canal

On Cape Caahd

I drive a truck now

But I used to drive a caah

These days I have a garaahge

So I don’t paahk in the yaahd

I’m not much of a drinker

So you won’t find me at the baah

I belong to a caah club

Where you’ll hear lots of oohs and aahs

Some years ago

I had my aahs handed back to me

I asked where I could find a caah wash

They thought I said a cow wash

Yeah, we might have

A Baahston accent

Though we don’t notice it

The absent of aah aahs

Gave me a smile - we have so many regional variations here in the UK it gets quite confusing at times - Me? I speak Received Pronunciation (RP) don't you know !!

      • Accidental Poet

Thanks Michael. I didn't know you had regional variations in the UK. But I can tell the difference between UK and Australian accents. Love them both.

        • Michael Edwards

Irish and Scottish are easily distinguishable as are Liverpool, Birmingham and North East = but there are so many others beside. Actually us snobs who speak RP would argue that we don't have an accent - it's the pronunciation against which others are judged. The mantra being:

          We are English
          We speak English
          We don't have an accent.

          🙂 🙂 🙂

          AP,
I will never forget the time I was in NYC. Two nuns approached me and one of them asked me where they could take the AHAH! I said, “Excuse me Sister, what did you say?” She repeated the question. I still didn’t understand! I asked, “What are you looking for?” She responded, “Where is the station where we can take the AHAH to go to Brooklyn ?” “Ohhh, you mean the RR train,” I said! She responded, “Yes, that’s what I said...the AHAH train!” 🤣...and yes, they were from Baahstun!!

Yes, we tend to drop our Rs, no idea why. But I do find it funny and interesting of how people from other areas react to our accent. Funny thing is we don't even really notice it usually.

You’re absolutely right! When I visited Australia, I made a comment about their accent! I told them how much I liked it! They responded with, “We don’t have an accent. You’re the one with the accent!”

Well as for me, I just love the Boston accent...... it screams Yankee to me and that's just fine....... the South might be warm and it's has it's accents but Boston goes back to our beginnings.......Men of the Sea and Dump the Tea!

                • Accidental Poet

Yes, we drop our Rs for some reason, don't know how it got started. But personally, I love the southern and mid-western drawls best. And yes, we did dump the tea. I wonder how the fish liked it. Thanks for reading and your comment.

Well come to think of it - now that you mention........ the old cowboy accents did get to me too............ Men of Prairies and thank you ma'am.............. life runs like a movie to me.............
