The very sincere or tender affection that I entertain for you my dear Sister
The hatred that lies between us has caused a tear in my heart
Due to both parties negligence, it has caused a blister
Our opposing viewpoints has torn our family apart
The patriot and the loyalists
They are the very same, but with a different name
The colonist and the royalist
We are all fighting for the same thing just using different terms and names
I wrote several times during the siege of Boston
But I never received a line and now I am in pain
I’ve been left to wonder if my letters have been tossed in the bin
None of you ever have answered my letters time and time again
Lucy and I are doing just fine
I much wish to know all these particulars
But all of you never write me a line
My apprehension of the lack of words is auricular
How horrid is this war
That it pits Brother against Brother
And the parents against the child that causes hatred to ooze from the core
I wish for this hatred to be smothered
Who were the promoters of this?
I know not, but god knows
For this war to end would be bliss
But God's wrath shall blow
It is a pity the little time we have to spend
In this world where the art of killing men has become a perfect science
We cannot enjoy ourselves and our friends
For we are far too busy devising means to destroy each other instead of forming alliances
In our juvenile days my Hannah we little thought
That this barbaric art would have reached America so soon
But alas men are dying in various spots
And the people sing a mournful tune
But enough of this talk
I hope that God shall send a speedy issue to this war
And I hope for our happy meetings and talks
And to someday see you walk upon America’s shores
I send you a sincere wish and a prayer
I will never cease to be your affectionate friend and sister
This is a close to my letter
This is the very sincere or tender affection that I entertain for you, my dear Sister

- Comment from author about the poem: I wrote this poem for a school project in order to see the musical Hamilton. This poem is about Lucy Knox who was a historical figure during the American Revolutionary War. Lucy Knox's husband was Henry Knox who was the right-hand man of George Washington and created Fort Knox.Next, this poem is based on Lucy's letter to her royalist sister Hannah whom never contacted her after Lucy married Henry, who at the time was a poor bookbinder before the war. Anyway, thank you for taking the time to read my poem!
